Field Fishing

The fishing should be good in the fields on the lower sections of the Gunpowder. Yesterday's rains inflated the steam to the tipping point and there was flooding at Glencoe Rd. This offers a rare opprtunity to go after the elusive "Grass Trout". Fly selections should revolve around the usuals, Rye flies, Kentucky Blue flies and all of your Fescue flies. Since the mud will be thick, you may want to use heavier tippet and pull them through the muck. In the thinner areas, you may see some tailing freshwater bonefish(carp). They are great mudders. Sneak up, stay in the taller grass and throw. The Trout may be spooky and in the deeper puddle pockets. Check the water exiting the fields as the trout will try to move toward the moving water. Please follow all trespassing laws and ask the landowners for permission. Four-wheel drive may be a necessity.

On a more normal note, the weather should be getting warmer and this will give you a better shot on the River. Midge activity should be on the rise and stones are always a great idea.
