Stream Conditions- December 26th, 2009

Well, the spring thaw is early this year and the 20+ inches of snow is heading to the rivers. As of this morning, the gauge at Glencoe was not reporting, however the Parkton gauge was reading 687cfs and climbing. That being the case, Glencoe and the rest of the lower Gunpowder is close to flood stage. Temperatures are in the low 40's and may come up slightly.

When the water recedes and gets to wadable levels, small streamers and midges will be your best bets. If there is sun, the midges will hatch as the stones on the bottom are warmed. These hatches can be prolific and the fish will respond to them. Disco midges, cream and black midges and Griffiths gnats in sizes 20 through 26 will be the fare. Buggers, matukas, zonkers and bunny leeches should be swung as the waters come down and is still off color. Sculpin patterns will be effective as well.
