The flows have dropped but expectations should remain high. As of this morning, the Parkton gauge read 30cfs and Glencoe was 130. This is a big departure from the previous flows but the temps are in the low 50's which is a good thing.
For whatever reasons, the gates were shut and now we have to concentrate on presentation. The sulphur hatches continue to be great and caddis and ants are also working. The fly choices are diverse but the emphasis is now on the fisherman. When the water is thin, you should take extra care in stalking fish and moving through the water. Less water means spooky fish and you need to be stealthy and move slowly in the water. Get out if you have to and walk aroung to the good spots. Presentation is the key!!
As for the flies, this is a great time of the year to throw a great assortment. Sulphurs, dries and wets, from 14 to 18, caddis in 16's, pheasant tail nymphs, hares ears and copper johns in 16 and 18, wooly buggers in 8 to 12, and ants in 14 through 18. Terrestrials are coming on better and better, but for now the ants are the ones!
