Stream Conditions-January 29th, 2010

Cold and clear! The conditions are really good on the stream, but the water is very cold. As of this morning, Parkton was 150cfs and 38 degrees. Glencoe was 384cfs and 38 degrees.

As is the case in the dead of winter, water temps below 40 degrees result in slow fishing. This is not to say that there is nothing to catch. Fish are being caught on nymphs and streamers. Tippets should be fluorocarbon as they are more translucent in the clear conditions. Presentation is always a must, especially now! Using longer rods will help when swinging streamers and nymphs. The 10 foot rods are perfect for these scenarios to allow longer drifts and the ability to reach further acsross the water.

Flies to use are no great surprise. The standards, including pheasant tails, black pheasant tails, midges, stone fly nymphs and dark spiders, will offer the best chances for hookups. Streamers, wooley buggers, matukas, sculpin, and minnow patterns will also work. The best times of the day is when air temps are at the peak, between 11 and 3. Patience and plenty of layers will get results.
