General Conditions-March 23rd, 2011

Spring is so close we can almost taste it. The conditions on the Gunpowder are still cold, but the flows have improved. Due to the recent rains there has been water cresting the dam and the flows have been around 150cfs at the dam. The temps are in the mid 40's, which is still a bit below optimal. There is still good fishing in the upper section. The lower section of the river opened on Saturday and there was no shortage of people on this part of the river. Pick-ups lined Glencoe and the lots were full of those looking to jerk out their fish. This should last for another week and then fishing will get back to normal. Aside from the stocked fish, there were some browns taken. As for those throwing flies, the stoneflies have been active. Black elk hair caddis will work on the surface for them. Black Hares Ear is a great nymph for the stones as well. Pheasant tail and pheasant tail flashbacks and working now as well as regular hares ear. Streamers are also working well in clear and dirty water. REMEMBER, FELT SOLES ARE NO LONGER ALLOWDE IN MARYLAND WATERS!
